TooScared Asks: I put up my website, I think I’ve done what I was told to do, but I can’t seem to get anywhere. My traffic is crappy, I haven’t made any money and I don’t know why. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: After taking a look at “TooScared’s” website and asking them a few more questions, it was obvious what was happening. They had succumbed to a combination of Information Overload and Analysis Paralysis. These are common problems. It also seemed that there was an underlying fear that was holding them back. I’m going to answer their question in two parts – Part one will examine the psychology of their problem and part two will give practical suggestions for getting back on track.
Succeeding in Online Business – Part 2
In a practical sense, you will need to have an understanding of ‘Why’ you are not achieving the success you would like to in your online business before you can take the next step. Please focus on taking responsibility and then moving forward. ACTION is the real key.
You will need to do the proper research up front to tell you if the niche you have chosen is going to make you what you need each month. This way, you will know if that one niche is going to do alone or if you will need to add more sites or expand on your niches or both.
- In order to create and maintain a focus on your current project, blinders will be necessary. It is necessary to keep to the current project and take it to a successful level before you allow yourself to move on to the next project. If you really want to succeed in online business, you cannot give up before you have taken your current effort from start to profit!
- If you also find yourself questioning WHO to trust, you are certainly not alone. This is a big issue as many people have lost money and feel cheated by supposed ‘experts’ who take more than they give. I’d like to take it one step further to say that there are many that you can trust, but you have to be smart and know HOW to use the information given. There are a lot of specialists that have awesome information for sale, but if you don’t know HOW to work it – then it’s just like getting cheated.
- It’s time to get real and tell yourself, “I only need ________ to get this done. I will only allow myself to pay attention to _____ until it is completed.” You are not obligated to look at anything else but the task at hand – let all the other information go by. Really tell yourself that you need to help YOUR online business, not theirs and only focus on what you need Right Now!
- Okay, but what if you don’t know what it is you NEED? Then don’t pay attention until it IS something that you know you need. You’ve got to start with the basics and add on as the subjects come up. Wait until you see the problem before you go looking for any solution. Resist the urge to fix it if it ain’t broke!!
- Plan ahead and include the things that you have researched that will get you CLOSER to your goal and do not waste time on the things that will get you farther. If you cannot determine for sure that it will HELP you – then walk away. This is the time to really go back to basics and stick to one project before moving on. Keep your ideas in a list that you refer to later and make the commitment to doing only one at a time! Also, please remember that there is no such thing as a ‘One Size Fits All’ blueprint for succeeding in online business.
(That said, if you are interested in Affiliate Marketing specifically – then you really do need to get the Super Affiliate Handbook – no doubt about it.)
However, if you want to be told exactly what to do and when to do it, then you might need to just get a job and be done with it. There is no shame in that. Or you can focus on getting an online job as those are becoming more and more relevant. But if you really crave and really want to have creative freedom and the power to make your own decisions, that that is something that you will have to dig deep down to decide. Once you’ve made that decision, then the focus and commitment come next. You may want to consider a consultant or coach to get the ball rolling (or a brainstorming/coaching group like I did), but after that it is up to YOU. You need to feel that burning desire way down in the pit of your stomach in order to succeed in online business (or anything else, for that matter!). It has to come from within and you have to be willing to not stop until you have succeeded.
There is a big difference between “Making Money Online” and “Starting An Online Business.” Making money could certainly be short term, while an online business is for the long term.
I’d like to leave you with this thought: Now that we are in December of 2009 – Are you in a different spot now than where you were in January of 2009? What are you willing to do to make 2010 different? This is a great opportunity to change your mindset and make the commitment to not make 2010 a repeat of this last year. It’s time to get it done and really start succeeding in online business today!
