Consistently choosing keywords and key phrases to use in your overall SEO strategy is definitely an easy plus efficient way to have webpages and websites to rank well. Don’t leave money on the table by ignoring the usage of keywords rather than making the most out of this awesome tool.

Many site owners make one of two mistakes: they either think using keywords and key phrases is extremely complicated or they are convinced they currently know what keywords and key phrases their target audience is using.

How To Get The Right Keywords

Choosing keywords does not have to become long and complex undertaking. What it’ll require is an excellent keyword tool and some research of which keywords and phrases will work the most effective for you. There are many keyword tools available that are free and many that are for sale. You might want to start with a free tool to get a feel for how they work after which consider paying for one later on.

A good free one to start with is one offered by Wordtracker. This tool can be used by you typing in the broad term that your site is based upon. To give an example, let’s say your site was about dog grooming, then that’s what you’d type in. The keyword tool would then supply a listing of the top 100 keywords and key phrases related to ‘dog grooming’. This list can also get the amount of average amount of daily searches for that specific keyword or phrase as well. Several may have hundreds or thousands of daily searches, while some will only have a few searches. You’ll want to begin choosing keywords that make sense on your site and have a good number of daily search results. It’s not necessary to always find the keywords and key phrases with the highest searches as those also have the most competition.

For example, at the time of this writing, the phrase ‘dog grooming equipment’ only has 22 searches normally daily -  but let’s put that into perspective. Meaning that the term is searched over 600 times per month or almost 8,000 times annually. When you properly optimized a page on your site for the phrase ‘dog grooming equipment’ you could easily rank well and reap the traffic rewards.

The second mistake that many site owners make is thinking they already know just what keywords and key phrases are used by their target audience. Very often, they’re wrong. Knowing how to attract the best keywords requires stepping into the audience’s shoes for a moment. A lot of site owners use industry jargon or create their website through an insider viewpoint and end up scratching their heads when the traffic is nonexistent. The sites copy must incorporate the keywords and phrases how the target audience is using them, not what the site owner thinks they should use.

Don’t make the same mistake of assuming that you already know just what your audience wants and is looking for. In fact, choosing keywords and phrases after conducting some research will make conversions soar because you are meeting the people where they are. Your target market will let you know exactly what they are looking for by typing keywords and phrases in to the major search engines. Collect this information simply by conducting your personal research and choosing keywords that fit in along with the purpose of your website.
