TooScared Asks: I put up my website, I think I’ve done what I was told to do, but I can’t seem to get anywhere. My traffic is crappy, I haven’t made any money and I don’t know why. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: After taking a look at “TooScared’s” website and asking them a few more questions, it was obvious what was happening. They had succumbed to a combination of Information Overload and Analysis Paralysis. These are common problems. It also seemed that there was an underlying fear that was holding them back. I’m going to answer their question in two parts – Part one will examine the psychology of their problem and part two will give practical suggestions for getting back on track.
I’ve seen a lot of people just quit at this point and give up – claiming that whatever system or product they had purchased was a scam and blaming everything but themselves. So, let’s take a real look at the dynamics of succeeding in online business.
First we have to understand and take a look at the issues most online entrepreneurs face. Let’s start with Information Overload. This makes it all too easy to begin one project, not see instant results, and then move on to another project. The truth is that most of the time, there are more than enough directions to turn. More than enough ‘experts’ promising that they have the answer and that if you only “plug in” their system, that you will make a wad of cash! The lack of focus here is easy to achieve.
Second is Analysis Paralysis. This is really where the fear starts to take hold. The more you take your project and really look at it in the light, the more ways you can see to fail. That’s really what is going on here, isn’t it? The fear of failure — or even worse…The fear of success!!
The REAL question here is: If we want to succeed in online business, why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we short change our talents and our abilities and focus instead on every way in which it can go wrong? I heard Ali Brown say something like this once, “If you really want to deal with and conquer your personal issues, all you need to do is start a business! Starting a business will bring all of them up and you’ll have to face them one by one to succeed!” (Ouch! Boy, doesn’t the truth hurt!) But you know what she’s saying, right? At the beginning it’s so easy to get excited…the development phase is fun because it’s creative. But when does the fear begin to kick in? At the marketing phase? The fear of failure seems to be the overwhelming reason to give up – however, consider that you cannot name it a failure if you have not done everything that you could to make your business successful!!
It’s time to get some perspective here. If you can get started for only about $10 out of your pocket…what is there to be afraid of? What is the risk? Some say that it is the risk of doing the work with no result. Others will admit that it’s the fear of success…they fear changes in their lives, more responsibility and having to live up to the commitments that come with success. To get past this fear, you have to realize that YOU are in TOTAL CONTROL. It’s 100% up to YOU to decide to make $1000 per month or $10,000 per month. It’s all up to YOU and how much YOU are willing to put into it to succeed in online business.
